Earlier this school year, Mrs. Faria's kindergarten class at the Wilkins School won a statewide contest from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation to name a MassDOT snowplow. "Snowdrop" from the Wilkins School was one of 12 winning names in this contest for elementary and middle school classrooms across Massachusetts. MassDOT officials recently brought "Snowdrop" to the Wilkins for Mrs. Faria's class to see up close! State Senator Walter Timilty was on hand to present a citation from the State Senate as well. Mrs. Faria's class also received a $100 gift card for school supplies from the MassDOT. Congratulations to Mrs. Faria's kindergarten class at the Wilkins School!
As part of the C.A.R.E.S. initiative at the Wilkins School, students learn about how to best exemplify the traits of Community, Acceptance, Responsibility, Empathy, and Self Control throughout the school year. The Wilkins recently focused on the importance of empathy. Congratulations to the Wilkins students pictured here for being recognized for exemplifying the positive character trait of empathy!
The Wilkins School Student Council, under the direction of advisor Mrs. Pearl, organizes a penny drive each year to raise funds for a charity or cause of the Council's choosing. This year, the students collected $362.27 (with some quarters, dimes and nickels mixed in as well), with the money raised going to support the Animal Protection Center of Southeastern Massachusetts. The Stoughton School Committee unanimously approved a three-year contract for incoming Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph Baeta, effective July 1, 2023. Dr. Baeta, pictured here just before signing the contract, is a Stoughton resident and graduate of Stoughton High School, and has been the Superintendent of the Norton Public Schools since 2013. Prior to that, he served as Superintendent of Schools in Holbrook and has experience as a principal, curriculum coordinator, and teacher, in addition to years of service on various committees in town. Congratulations Dr. Baeta! We look forward to when he formally joins us in July.
More than 250 people attended the Books Before Bed Literacy Event at the Wilkins School! Students, family members, and staff wore pajamas and enjoyed reading to each other. Staff members modeled how to do an interactive read aloud and then families had an opportunity to practice these strategies as they read with each other. All students also left with a brand new book!
Third graders at the Wilkins School recently planted sunflowers and string beans as an introduction to their study of the lifecycle of plants.
The Wilkins School Student Council, under the direction of advisor Mrs. Pearl, has organized a coat drive to help keep people in the local area warm this winter season. The Student Council members are pictured here in front of the donation bin at the Wilkins. Student Council members went to each class to announce the coat drive and encourage their fellow students (and school community) to donate. They have collected almost 100 new or gently worn coats. The coats will be given to Anton's Cleaners to be cleaned and distributed to those in need. Keep up the good work!
Third grade students at the Wilkins School met with their kindergarten buddies to share the books they had both recently written. These partnerships are one of the social emotional learning initiatives at the Wilkins.

The Wilkins School had a great turnout for its Family STEM Night! Students and families were able to visit different classrooms to hear from guest presenters about their career in STEM, and then the students got to try a STEM activity related to that career field. Topics included geology, computers, construction, engineering, electrical work, police detective work, and firefighting. Mrs. Faria's Kindergarten class at the Wilkins School is pictured here during a recent reading workshop lesson. Students enjoyed some time outside while learning that they could use connecting words like and, after, then, and later to join the pages of their storybooks. After reading Jack and the Beanstalk as a class, students read their own storybooks under the beautiful fall trees behind the Wilkins School.
In conjunction with Veterans Day in November, the Wilkins School Student Council put together care packages to send to six Stoughton High graduates who are currently serving in the Armed Forces as their community service project this month. These SHS grads are stationed both stateside and overseas and will share the donations with their fellow servicemen and women. Third grade students at the Wilkins School participated in a rounding activity. They went “shopping” where they had $1 to spend and chose two items they wanted to buy. They rounded the prices of the items, added these together, and determined if they had enough money to buy both items.
As part of the units of study phonics program, kindergarten students at the Wilkins School made “name” necklaces.

4th grade students at the Wilkins School were working on a project in art class featuring radial symmetry, where there is symmetry/balance in several directions arranged around a central point.
